To view more programmes in this series visithttp://vega.org.uk/video/subseries/27 In October 2010 the Nobel Prize for Physics was won by Andre Geim and Constantin Novoselov at Manchester University for their work on graphene "for groundbreaking experiments regarding the two-dimensional material graphene" but if you are left wondering just what graphene is then watch this video. Jonathan explains all.

What is Graphene?
Graphene is anatomic-scale honeycomb latticemade of carbon atoms.
Graphene(rus.Графен) is anallotropeofcarbon, whose structure is one-atom-thickplanarsheets ofsp2-bondedcarbon atoms that are densely packed in a honeycomb crystal lattice.[1]The termgraphenewas coined as a combination ofgraphiteand the suffix-enebyHanns-Peter Boehm,[2]who described single-layer carbon foils in 1962.[3]Graphene is most easily visualized as anatomic-scale chicken wiremade of carbon atoms and their bonds. The crystalline or "flake" form of graphite consists of many graphene sheets stacked together.
The carbon-carbon bond length in graphene is about 0.142nanometers.[4]Graphene sheets stack to formgraphitewith an interplanar spacing of 0.335 nm, which means that a stack of three million sheets would be only one millimeter thick. Graphene is the basic structural element of some carbonallotropesincluding graphite, charcoal, carbon nanotubesandfullerenes. It can also be considered as an indefinitely largearomaticmolecule, the limiting case of the family of flatpolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
